MEAD, SOMA, MJÖÐR, TEJ, HONEY WINE
A globe spanning tradition...
Widely considered to be the world's oldest alcoholic beverage, mead has a long and storied tradition spanning the globe. Mead or other honey wine's have been produced from the Nordic countries down to Ethiopia and back up to Aristotle's Greece.
Traditionally mead is made by fermenting honey to produce a potent, sweet alcohol. Mead can additionally be produced with several different types of flavoring, ranging from fruits, to spices, and even, grapes.
We've found that most modern meaderies tend to produce a dry, light , mellow mead which, while good, we feel is too similar to wine. At Celtic Cross we strive for bold, strong flavors that highlight mead's unique characteristics and pay homage to the traditional meads of the past.
